UK heatwave: Hottest day of the year recorded as temperatures reach 33C

Hottest day of the year as temperatures reach 33C

Britain has experienced the hottest day of the year so far as temperatures hit just over 33C (91F) at Heathrow.
These was two days ago.. shortly after 2pm that the mercury had reached the year-high at the airport, after 32.8C been chalked up at nearby Northolt, west London.
Before today, 2013’s hottest day was last Wednesday, with 32.2C recorded in Hampton.
But with thunderstorms forecast, today is not only hotter but sweatier.
Earlier today Brendan Jones, a senior forecaster with Meteogroup, predicted conditions would be ‘very, very humid’.
He said: ‘So while 33C would be about a degree higher than the hottest temperature so far, it will feel even warmer.
‘It’s going to be sticky, oppressive and close, and will make things feel quite uncomfortable.’

Lightning strikes behind the London Eye, which was specially lit up to mark the birth of the royal baby

Hottest day of the year as temperatures reach 33C

Long to rain over us: Summer heatwave ends amid thunderstorms
One family was forced from their Bedford home at 6.30am after it was struck by lightning, setting a chimney stack ablaze.
‘There was a huge bang. The whole house shook with the violence of the strike,’ a neighbour said.
The dramatic change in weather came after a three-week heatwave which saw temperatures reach a seven-year high, peaking on Monday at 33.5C in London.

Flash floods have struck parts of Nottinghamshire after the country’s heatwave broke up amid a series of thunderstorms.

After the storm: Flash floods as heatwave ends

Around 50 homes are thought to have been flooded, with residents in Southwell particularly badly affected.
Nottinghamshire police have warned people that drain covers may have come loose underwater and that roads may be littered with debris.
‘Members of the public who have been working in floodwater are reminded that hand washing is essential,’ the force said.
Local road closures are in place meanwhile, including the A612, which is closed between Southwell and Thurgaton.
Yesterday’s storms saw a month’s worth of rain fall in just a few hours in some locations.
In Pershore, Worcestershire, 56mm (2.2in) of rain fell in a three-hour period, higher than the 50mm average total for the whole of July.
Thunderstorms and flooding also delayed tens of thousands of commuters and homes were set alight on Tuesday.
About 27,000 lightning bolts hit Britain in storms that caused rush-hour misery for rail passengers in Scotland, north England, the west Midlands, East Anglia and the south.

Royal baby: Tired and emotional – time to give the royal three some peace now

Time to give the Cambridges some peace
Wills seemed so calm, and Kate looked so incredibly beautiful and put-together for a woman who’d just given birth.
I don’t know how she managed heels and a smile; I felt like taking her slippers and a hot water bottle. William snapped his son into the royal baby car seat in about six seconds flat, leaving parents around the world rapt with admiration and envy, recalling their own nine-hour struggles clipping in their car seats (a labour in itself).
Of course there were the inevitable Diana comparisons, she who had left that same wing in 1982 and 1984 for the respective births of William and Harry. But apart from the similar pattern – polka dots – of their post-pregnancy dresses, the two women are worlds apart.
They looked the perfect little family as they walked down the hospital steps, but you could also see that the last thing they wanted to do was share their new son with the world.
In a sense we had no right to share in their joy, but I’m glad they let us.

Serb prime minister's battle to cure 'Leper' of Europe

Ivica Dacic, an ex-protege of Slobodan Milosevic, is now spearheading Serbia's bid to join the European Union, reports Colin Freeman

IF IVICA Dacic ever needs reminding of the challenges of dragging his country into the 21st century, he need only check his mobile phone for text messages. Ever since a group of hardline Serb nationalists got hold of the prime minister’s private phone number a few years ago, it has bleeped almost daily with threatening missives - some angry at him for handing over Serb war crimes suspects to the Hague and seeking Europe Union membership, others resenting his crackdown on Serbia’s flourishing organised crime rackets.

“I get this latest one last night,” said Mr Dacic, holding up his mobile handset. “It says: ’Dacic, the Serbs will kill you one day or another’. Others curse my family, or say that there will be a black funeral flag above my house soon. But I’ve had this mobile number for 15 years now, and I’m not about to change it.

India workforce - the future of global labour force

The Bengal tiger economy is still roaring, even if the acceleration of recent years may be difficult to sustain. While other emerging markets are seeing a slowdown in earnings growth, the home market offers India an element of economic immunity.
"The major factor driving growth in India is the increase in the working population", says Dalip Puri, Global Head of Indian Business Strategy, HSBC. That rapidly growing middle class will produce a quarter of the world's new workers over the next three years.

Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, was today discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal in Lagos for the murder of Kudirat Abiola.

The former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, was today discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal in Lagos for the murder of Kudirat Abiola.

The judgment overturns that of the Lagos High Court which convicted and sentenced the retired Major in January 2012 and sentenced him to death by hanging. The Court of Appeal, in their ruling, said there was not enough evidence to incriminate Al-Mustapha in the murder of Late Mrs Abiola.

Chief  MKO Abiola's wife was shot dead on June 4, 1996, on what was alleged to be the orders of Al-Mustapha.

EU immigrants coming to UK 'undercounted' campaigners have warned

The number of immigrants arriving in Britain from the European Union was undercounted by half a million over a ten year period, a difference the size of Manchester, campaigners have warned.
The mistake was discovered by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in May when they compared the results of the 2011 census with the population that they had expected to find on the basis of births, deaths and official immigration figures, Migrationwatch UK said.
This discovery means that immigration between mid 1997 and mid 2010 now totals nearly four million, rather than the 3.4 million recorded.

Spider women protest ,scaling London’s tallest skyscraper in a dramatic protest against drilling in the Arctic.

Six female activists were today scaling London’s tallest skyscraper in a dramatic protest against drilling in the Arctic.

The Greenpeace protesters began their dangerous ascent of the 72-storey Shard tower in the early hours of this morning.
The lead climbers were said to be “free-climbing” but were fixing safety ropes as they progressed up the glass building.
They were able to access the 310m building, the tallest in western Europe, at 4am from the roof of nearby London Bridge station. One third of the way into the climb, security officials attempted to talk them down through an open window but the women continued their ascent of the building with the goal of unfurling a banner from its peak.
Greenpeace said the action was intended to put Shell and other oil companies in the spotlight.
They said this evening that the climbers would not be unfurling the banner  because it was unsafe to do so.
The charity said on its Greenpeace UK Twitter page: "The art installation takes 4 hours so the climbers have decided it's not safe to install before it gets dark.
"We're still far from certain whether they can make it to the top but they're going to try. Only the two most experienced climbers will try the final ascent."
Greenpeace said it could take two hours for the climbers to reach the top, and there was a "large chance" they would not make it.
Earlier they said: “They chose to climb the Shard because it towers over Shell’s three London offices, including the oil giant’s global headquarters on the Southbank of the Thames.
“Shell is leading the oil companies’ drive into the Arctic, investing billions in its Alaskan and Russian drilling programmes.
“A worldwide movement of millions has sprung up to stop them, but Shell is refusing to abandon its plans. More pictures and videos coming soon.
