UK heatwave: Hottest day of the year recorded as temperatures reach 33C

Britain has experienced the hottest day of the year so far as temperatures hit just over 33C (91F) at Heathrow.

These was two days ago.. shortly after 2pm that the mercury had reached the year-high at the airport, after 32.8C been chalked up at nearby Northolt, west London. 

Before today, 2013’s hottest day was last Wednesday, with 32.2C recorded in Hampton.

But with thunderstorms forecast, today is not only hotter but sweatier.

Earlier today Brendan Jones, a senior forecaster with Meteogroup, predicted conditions would be ‘very, very humid’.

He said: ‘So while 33C would be about a degree higher than the hottest temperature so far, it will feel even warmer.

‘It’s going to be sticky, oppressive and close, and will make things feel quite uncomfortable.’

One family was forced from their Bedford home at 6.30am after it was struck by lightning, setting a chimney stack ablaze.

‘There was a huge bang. The whole house shook with the violence of the strike,’ a neighbour said.

The dramatic change in weather came after a three-week heatwave which saw temperatures reach a seven-year high, peaking on Monday at 33.5C in London.

Flash floods have struck parts of Nottinghamshire after the country’s heatwave broke up amid a series of thunderstorms.

Around 50 homes are thought to have been flooded, with residents in Southwell particularly badly affected.

Nottinghamshire police have warned people that drain covers may have come loose underwater and that roads may be littered with debris.

‘Members of the public who have been working in floodwater are reminded that hand washing is essential,’ the force said.

Local road closures are in place meanwhile, including the A612, which is closed between Southwell and Thurgaton.

Yesterday’s storms saw a month’s worth of rain fall in just a few hours in some locations.

In Pershore, Worcestershire, 56mm (2.2in) of rain fell in a three-hour period, higher than the 50mm average total for the whole of July.

Thunderstorms and flooding also delayed tens of thousands of commuters and homes were set alight on Tuesday.

About 27,000 lightning bolts hit Britain in storms that caused rush-hour misery for rail passengers in Scotland, north England, the west Midlands, East Anglia and the south.

Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, was today discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal in Lagos for the murder of Kudirat Abiola.

 

The former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, was today discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal in Lagos for the murder of Kudirat Abiola.

The judgment overturns that of the Lagos High Court which convicted and sentenced the retired Major in January 2012 and sentenced him to death by hanging. The Court of Appeal, in their ruling, said there was not enough evidence to incriminate Al-Mustapha in the murder of Late Mrs Abiola.

Chief  MKO Abiola's wife was shot dead on June 4, 1996, on what was alleged to be the orders of Al-Mustapha.

8-month old baby stabbed 90 times with scissors by his mother

 Eight months old Xiao Bao was stabbed 90 times in the face with scissors by his mother for biting her while she was breastfeeding him. The incident that has left many people shocked happened in Xuzhou, in the eastern China Jiangsu province. After the attack, the mother disappeared leaving the infant in a pool of his blood in the yard of their home. Xiao was found by his uncle who rushed him to the hospital. The baby needed more than 100 stitches. The mother, who has since been arrested, is not known to be suffering any kind of mental illness.
